The Inspector General of Police, Paul Tawiah Quaye, has directed regional police commanders in all parts of the country to clamp down on any group of persons who flout the Public Order Act. The directive follows recent agitation by youth of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who have been issuing death threats and taking over state property. The latest incident happened Thursday morning when irate NDC youth locked up the offices of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) at Asikuma Odoben Brakwa and insisting they will not back down until the district assembly considers their “concerns.” Supporters of the NDC also locked up the national offices of the party recently and demanded the dismissal of the former chairman of the Confiscated Vehicles Committee, Carl Wilson. No sooner had they stormed the offices than it was reported the President had sacked Mr Wilson. The agitations seem to be turning into a normal act in recent times but police officers have failed to act pointing out that the incidents have political undertones and must be dealt with by the ruling party. But the Head of Public Affairs at the Police Headquarters, DSP Kwesi Ofori, tells Joy News police officers who fail to enforce the IGP’s directive could be sanctioned. “We expect that the police will be doing more. Already, an existing law and it’s being re-echoed once more in view of recent developments and I can assure you that the police will be up to task.
