Ghana boxing legend, Azumah Nelson, is unperturbed by the seemingly smart schemes by Australian boxer Jeff Fenech 9 years after their bout in Melbourne.
In what was the last of three meetings between the pair, the Australian gained victory over the “Boxing Professor” by majority decision.
Fenech had to visit the hospital with broken ribs after the big exhibition bout.
This big spectacle was after Azumah had accounted for his illustrious opponent twice in the space of a year with the second coming by way of a technical knockout after only one round, in Fenech’s homeland in Australia.
Fenech convinced Azumah to come out of retirement 16 years after their second bout with a bait of a lucrative package. The Australian had his way on both fronts; having the bout and defeating the then overweight Azumah Nelson.
Nine years after the bout, and Fenech has failed to fulfill his financial part of the obligations. Despite these happenings, the former World Champion is unruffled about earthly wealth.
“I know he did it to harm me and that’s okay, Money is not everything and you know that.
“The greatest thing for me, which I very much appreciate, and am happy about, is that my father led me to God from my infancy.
“If I have God, I have everything that I want and that is enough for me, I have the favor of God and if you have the favor of God that is bigger than money and everything.”
Azumah Nelson held the WBC featherweight title once and the WBC super featherweight title twice over a period of 10 years. This earned him big recognition with his induction as the very first African into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
He was also recently named the Greatest Super featherweight of all time by the WBC. Azumah, who is a revered statesman in his native Ghana regularly graces the WBC’s conventions around the world and is involved in boxing promotion amongst other business interests.
Fenech on the other hand on titles in the bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight titles.
Fenech appears at poker events around the world including the Aussie Millions and the World Series of Poker having won the Shane Warne 888 Poker World Series of Poker Celebrity Bounty Event at Crown Casino.
