Ghana's Interior Minister, Martin Amidu, has been asked to appear before Parliament by Thursday to answer questions on news of fleeing Ghanaians into neighbouring Togo. The BBC Tuesday reported that about 3,500 Ghanaians have fled a conflict in northern Ghana and are being catered for at a refugee camp in Togo. But Ghanaian officials have disputed the figure, arguing that the two communities involved in the ethnic conflict have a population of less than 2000. Not only did they say the number was exaggerated, but also downplayed the level of the conflict to warrant such a number fleeing from the country. However, when the Parliament of Ghana resumed from recess on Wednesday, the issue was raised on the floor of the house, prompting the Majority Leader, Cletus Avorka, to lead calls on the Interior Minister to brief Parliament on the conflicting reports and clarify issues on the status of Ghanaians in Togo.Meanwhile, Ghanaian and Togolese government officials have been meeting in Accra to discuss the influx of Ghanaian refugees into northern Togo. Some residents in the conflict towns have appealed to the government to put in measures to bring lasting peace to the areas."We are very much peeved and very, very sad about this whole situation, something that has never happened in our district (Bunkprugu-Yunyoo) is what we are seeing, so we are not happy at all."It is actually creating a problem for us, this is our farming season, and we have only one season in a year, and this is the time we need to till the land and get food for our family," a resident told Joy News.Another worried resident complained about the volatile situation in his area due to the absence of security personnel.Disputes over land and chieftaincy are responsible for the conflict.Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
