The Minority in Parliament is demanding an apology from the Israeli Ambassador over his criticism of Ghana’s vote at the UN which rejected calls for Israel to move its capital to Jerusalem.
The vote became necessary after the US President Donald Trump threatened to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Ghana was among 128 countries that endorsed the position that Jerusalem is a disputed area between Israel and Palestine and can only become Israel’s capital after a peace deal is reached by the two countries.
Israeli Ambassador to Ghana Ami Mehl in a statement said his country regrets the mistaken vote of Ghana and expressed hope the mistake would not be repeated.
Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the comment is an attack on Ghana’s sovereignty.
“Such utter disrespect and insult to the Ghanaian nation-state, you do not do that,” he said.
“That statement is very unfortunate,” he added.
“This attack on our sovereignty must stop. Nobody should be issuing threats to any other sovereign country,” he insisted.
The North Tongu MP said the Foreign Minister must quickly summon the Israeli Ambassador and demand an apology.
“To tell you the truth, many other countries would have expelled him by now. But at this stage, it will be good to give a hearing first and if he stands by and does not render an apology we can begin to take the next step,” he added.
Mr. Ablakwa further commended government over the country’s decision not to support the US on this issue when it came up at the United Nations.
