Brazil midfielder Joelinton may have played his last game for Newcastle United, says manager Eddie Howe.
The 27-year-old has been ruled out until May after undergoing surgery on a thigh injury.
Joelinton is out of contract in 2025 and Newcastle are under pressure to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
"He has 18 months left on his contract so it's a possibility he'll be sold in the summer," said Howe.
"I'm not a fortune teller but it's a possibility. I hope that's not the case. I want him to stay. I love him as a person and player.
"But before a player signs a contract he has to be happy with everything and we are not there yet."
Joelinton, 27, joined Newcastle in a £40m deal from German side Hoffenheim in 2019 and has won five caps for Brazil.
The midfielder has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals.
Newcastle's need to comply with PSR - formerly Financial Fair Play - has seen the likes of Joelinton and Almiron linked with exits this month.
Callum Wilson, who United signed from Bournemouth for £20m in 2020, has 18 months left on his contract.
"He's got big ambitions and we want to keep him here but some things are out of our control," said Howe of Wilson.
"The club is acting with the long-term interests of the club and they have to. Let's see what happens."
Kieran Trippier has attracted interest from German giants Bayern Munich, with the 33-year-old also out of contract in 2025.
"We hope he will stay and we're very confident he will be part of our long-term future," said Howe.
"But I have to make it clear, he has never asked to leave or even questioned his future here. We've had conversations in the last week and it's always been about Newcastle. It's important I make that clear. His commitment to Newcastle shouldn't be questioned.
"It's a huge compliment that a club like Bayern Munich are interested."
