Markets, shops and corporate offices within the Central Business District of Kumasi are expected to close on Friday and Saturday as the country embarks on a nationwide clean-up exercise.
A statement from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly is advising business owners in the region to partake in the exercise by closing their shops from 6 am until mid-morning and at noon.
“On Friday, there will be a clean-up exercise for private and public institutions, including shops, offices and markets in their operational areas and environs from 6 am to 10 am. All should remain closed till the end of the exercise,” the statement noted.
It continued that: “All trading and commercial activities within the Central Business District on Saturday shall remain closed until the end of the clean-up exercise. Key areas for the exercise on Saturday include Alabar, Boss FM to Otumfuo roundabout, Asem astroturf, Yalewa Zongo, and M/A Zion school – Asafo”.
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council has designated the two-day national exercise for institutional and community clean-up activities.
On Friday, July 10, 2026, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), MMDAs, educational institutions, health facilities, security establishments, and public and private institutions are expected to clean their office premises and immediate surroundings.
The Ghana Education Service has also been requested to ensure students at Junior High and Senior High Schools across the region partake in the exercise.
A community clean-up exercise is expected on Saturday, July 11, 2026, with residents encouraged to participate in desilting drains, clearing choked gutters, removing refuse, and cleaning public spaces, markets, and lorry parks.
On this day, commercial drivers are expected not to operate until the end of the exercise.
Security agencies, including the Police, Armed Forces, Fire Service, Immigration Service, Prisons and Ambulance Service, will also partake in the clean-up on Saturday.
The National Clean-up Day is aimed at improving cleanliness in communities, preventing sanitation-related diseases and mitigating floods.
