The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly says it will be compelled to take legal action against property owners who fail to provide places of convenience in their homes. Though figures are not readily available, authorities say many homes in the city have no toilets. The development puts pressure on the assembly to provide facilities for residents. The World Toilet Organization estimates about 2.6 billion people worldwide struggle daily for access to proper, clean toilet facilities. In Ghana, almost half, especially, of rural dwellers are not covered. Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive, Samuel Sarpong says the assembly will strengthen enforcement of its bye-laws to prosecute recalcitrant landlords. A recent survey in Ghana rated Kumasi metropolis high for having least cases of open defecation. But Mr. Sarpong believes there is still more work to be done in order to achieve desired results.
