The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has requested for urgent government support to settle its indebtedness to suppliers to ensure uninterrupted service to the public.The hospital currently owes creditors thousands of cedis, though officials will not give actual figures.Minister of Health, Alban Bagbin, says though the hospital has other concerns that need urgent attention, government will seriously consider a bailout for the institution.It is Mr. Bagbin’s first visit to Komfo Anokye Hospital since assuming responsibility for the Health Ministry a couple of weeks ago.High cost of replacing and maintaining ageing equipment and medical consumables is affecting the smooth running of Ghana’s second largest teaching hospital.Though health insurance is one of the biggest contributors of the hospital’s revenue, rejection of claims by the National Health Insurance Authority is negatively affecting finances.The Komfo Anokye Hospital Board appealed to the ministry to rescue the hospital from collapsing.Mr. Bagbin told journalists the hospital’s request needs very urgent attention.“We need to support them now to be able to get everyday consumables moving that is also a challenge now because they are now owing a lot of their suppliers. And so they’ve requested urgently for a bail-out,” he said.Mr. Bagbin however wants the hospital to improve the quality of service delivery.He said the present state of affairs at Komfo Anokye makes a mockery of its much-touted center of excellence tag.“A lot more will have to be done because we can clearly satisfactorily state these are centers of excellence in healthcare delivery. We have seen the congestion in the wards; we have seen the age of the equipments, we have seen lack of some basic supplies”.
