A former Energy Minister under the Kufuor administration says the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) did nothing wrong in engaging the EO Group to explore oil in the country. K.T. Hammond, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi-Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, described the GNPC’s dealings with the EO Group as being “beyond reproach.” “Our dealings with these guys (EO Group) right to the point at which we go to Parliament, to me, is beyond reproach,” he stressed. His comment comes after news of a planned prosecution of the EO Group, a partner of oil exploration firm Kosmos, by the Attorney-General's office. A leaked charge sheet from the AG’s office reveals series of charges the AG is contemplating filing against the group, who together with Kosmos and Tullow, are developing the Jubilee Oil Field. The leaked charge sheet indicates 25 charges have been leveled against the EO Group and its directors. They include causing financial loss of several billions of dollars to the GNPC, money laundering and conspiracy to forge official documents. The Kosmos-EO Group contract was awarded by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. While the AG is outraged over the leakage of the unfinished charge sheet to the media, Mr. Hammond says he does not expect the AG to prosecute any entity over the EO Group deal. The former minister said “This Attorney General lady is a fine one. I wouldn’t think she would want to do anything desperate in her desperation to do anything.” Mr Hammond, who claims he personally worked on the MOU on the engagement of the EO Group, said “anybody who takes on EO Group…takes on the Kufuor administration.” He said any such plan to prosecute the company would be “an oxymoron; a juxtaposition of awkward opposites”.
