A group of teachers in the Ashanti regional capital calling itself Concerned Teachers Association is bracing up for an industrial action to register their protest against disparities in the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Pay Policy.
Members of the group are unhappy their salaries were slashed contrary to promises by the Fair Wages and Salary Commission and Ghana National Association of Teachers.
The group, made up of National Association of Graduate Teachers and the GNAT has scheduled a meeting for Thursday to decide when to begin their action.
Their protest comes less than 24-hours after teachers in the Techiman Municipality of the Brong Ahafo region laid down their tools, calling for a review of the Single Spine Pay Policy.
In an interview with Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah, leaders of the group who want to remain anonymous accused the leadership of GNAT of failing to fight for members.
They have warned educational officials, heads of schools and other top ranking officers not to interfere in their planned meeting at the Childrens’ Park on Thursday morning in Kumasi.
They are unhappy education officials especially leadership of GNAT has over the years served allegedly as stooges for politicians, relegating the needs of its members to the background.
"Some of us have lost as much as GHS100, GHS50 while others have lost about GHS30; for me personally, I was shocked to learn GHS700 has been slashed on my salary", said leader of the group.
While arguing their concerns are legitimate, the teachers called on all teachers who are concerned about their future to join in the protest.
"They brought a circular that they are going to jumb everyone on two levels, two level jumps….If you are telling me you are taken me to two levels and reduce my salary by GHS100, what are you telling me", an aggrieved teacher questioned.
The Concerned Teachers also want to institute the action to kick against the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) whom they accuse of being political stooges.
"We want to kick against GNAT because most politicians are within GNAT. When they (GNAT) say ABC, you go to the next area and all you hear is AC and you hear BC in the next area. Always they don’t take one decision," he lamented.
