Ghanaian lawyer, Elijah Kwame Owusu Danso, has stated why he accepted to be the running mate for Alan Kyerematen, the Presidential Candidate for Movement for Change.
In an interview with Lexis Bill on Joy FM’s ‘Personality Profile, Kwame noted that agreed to be the running for the former Minister of Trade and Industry because he bought into his ideologies.
According to him, Alan’s inclination towards elevating the youth’s participation in governance gave him a good reason to be part of his team.
“The reason I accepted this [appointment] is because of the conversation about Ghana. It comes to Ghana. Ultimately, the conversation is about building united Ghana for Ghanaians. The decision to join Alan Kyerematen is borne out of that desire to see a new Ghana; a Ghana that will give opportunities to the have-nots, a Ghana that will consider the plight o the young person who is living in Akyem-Asafo, Bole Banboi or Bimbila or Asante-Mampong for instance, a Ghana that will not discriminate,” he said.
He noted that his research shows that a lot of young people voted for the President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2016, hoping that they would see some change.
“So what it means is that the young people have an important role to play. We are key stakeholders in determining who leads us. The question then is, why is it that we don’t have a seat at the table? We created a table, we have given the leadership to political elites, but when it comes to conversations about things that affect us directly, we are not invited to the table.
That narrative ought to change. That is precisely why when the conversation started by me joining Alan Kyerematen I listened to him and he said ‘I’m building a government of national unity, a governance which will not not factor where your political leanings are, which ideological leanings you have, which religion you belong to, which ethnic background you belong to. Those conversations in my estimation are not relevant today’,” Kwame said.
The former musician also indicated that although the announcement of his appointment was met with derision from a section of the public, as they made reference to his ‘gologolo’ song, that rather gave the him more visibility.
