The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper Kwesi Pratt Jnr has expressed shock at news of some Ghanaians seeking asylum in Brazil after they entered the country as supporters of the Black Stars during the ongoing World Cup tournament.

Speaking on Peace FM's morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ he said “when I heard the news on BBC I was totally shocked”.

Some 500 supporters were reportedly sent to Brazil to cheer on the Black Stars during the ongoing World Cup tournament in that country.

However, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) and other international media have reported news about the Brazilian federal police who claim that some 200 Ghanaians have requested asylum after entering the country on tourist visas to watch the World Cup.

The asylum seekers said “they are Muslims fleeing inter-religious conflicts in their home country”.

The story has caused a lot of embarrassment and shock to Ghanaians.

Kwesi Pratt described the situation as disheartening but said the harsh economic and social condition in the country is a contributing factor to that decision.

He said the government’s inability to create jobs for graduates has compelled many of them to seek better lives out of the country.

“There are so many graduates living outside the country doing menial jobs just to survive due to the appalling situation in the country”.

He advised that government put in place measures that encourage citizens to feel safe in the country adding that as long as economic situation in the country is not favorable, many people will seek asylum elsewhere.
