Abdul Ganiyu Lawal cruised to a landslide victory to retain his post as the chairman of the Eastern Regional Football Association on Saturday, crashing his opponent Nana Kwadwo Budu II to a humiliating defeat.
Lawal received an outstanding 90% of the votes, signalling his overwhelming support among delegates in Koforidua, bringing an end to an acrimonious two-year battle for the control of football in the region.
Lawal polled an impressive 147 votes with his main challenger; Nana Budu managing a paltry 17 votes out of the total valid votes cast in elections.
The retention of Lawal signals a massive endorsement of his stewardship as against Nana Budu who has attempted in several ways including going to the law courts to unseat the incumbent despite being profoundly unpopular within the Eastern Region football circles as the elections results showed.
While hundreds of people gathered at the elections ground to joyously jubilate the emphatic and resounding victory, the humiliated Budu promptly exited the venue to minimize the impact of his thrashing.
Some reports suggest Budu left the venue in the company of some machomen, threatening a new round of court action against the decision to vote Lawal into office.
But supporters of Lawal were unconcerned as they poured white powder on the administrator, signalling success as they sang and chanted his name with gusto.
