The University of Ghana has made clear its intention to appeal a court ruling prohibiting the school from converting Commonwealth Hall into a mixed gender graduate facility. The university had cited the behaviour of residents of the all-male hall over the years, which it claimed has cast a slur on the image of the institute, for its decision to convert the hall, justifying it with an incident at the last graduation ceremony where it was alleged students from the hall heckled former United Nations Boss and Chancellor of the University, Kofi Annan. The students, therefore, initiated a court action after the authorities insisted they would go ahead with the conversion. And a High Court in Accra ruled last week that the university should maintain the status of the Commonwealth Hall. But the university’s registrar, Joseph Badu says lawyers are preparing to file an application for the judgment to be put on hold before attempts are made to get it completely reversed. Mr. Badu tells JOYNEWS until the matter is fully resolved in court no student will be admitted into the hall. Meanwhile, students of the Commonwealth Hall say they will also go back to the court if the university refuses to admit students into the hall in the upcoming academic year. Joshua Laari President of the Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana said their lawyers are ready, “but we feel that it would be in the interest of this university that we find amicable solutions to problems than to keep dragging each other here and there”.
