GOLD medal hopeful Kerron Clement’s smiles turned to scowls yesterday when a bus taking him to the Olympic village got lost – and he was stuck on board for four hours.
The grumpy two-time world 400metres hurdles champion went on Twitter to tell the world he was marooned on the bus and desperate for the toilet.
The 26-year-old American’s tweet came just hours after he had revealed on the social networking site that he was “excited” about being in London for the Games.
In his first tweet of the day, Kerron posted: “It’s always exciting seeing other athletes on the flight to London. We are all after one thing. GOLD. But we are all Olympians for LIFE.”
But a couple of hours later, after the shuttle bus taking the Trinidad-born star and his US teammates from Heathrow airport to the Olympic village lost its way, he wasn’t so cheerful.
He tweeted: “Um, so we’ve been lost on the road for 4hrs. Not a good first impression London.
“Athletes are sleepy, hungry and need to pee. Could we get to the Olympic village please?”
However, Kerron was back in a good mood later when he tweeted: “Eating at the Olympic village. Love the variety of food choices. African, Caribbean, Halal cuisine, Indian and Asian and, of course, McDonald’s.”
The Americans weren’t the onlyOlympians to get caught up in the London traffic yesterday.
A bus carrying 30 Australian athletes, officials and medical staff from Heathrow airport to the Olympic village also got lost.
The party were taken on a Monopoly tour of London, pastBuckingham Palace and the backstreets of West Ham on the trip to Stratford, east London.
And a journey which should have taken one hour took three.
Aussie media officer Damian Kelly said: “The driver just said, ‘I’m sorry, it’s my first day on the job and I’m lost’.
“We were moving. We were in the Olympic lane and going places – we just weren’t going where we were supposed to go.
“He just said it was his first day in that bus and they hadn’t told them how the GPS worked. Apparently the Olympic village hadn’t been loaded on to it.
“We’d all been travelling for over 20 hours so it wasn’t the best way to finish a long trip.”
Athletes and officials from more than 50countries jetted in to Heathrow yesterday – on the airport’s busiest ever day. A total of 236,955passengers were expected to pass through the airport, beating the previous record of 233,562 set in July 2011.
Rain is expected to batter Britain all week but the weather will improve just in time for the start of the Olympics a week on Friday, experts predict.
Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said: “Next week we have someencouraging news as it’s going to be much more summery with more settled weather than we’ve had lately.
“There’s going to be high pressure across the UK, so people will see more sunshine and it will feel summery with temperatures reaching 22C.
“I can’t say whether the weather will last for the Olympics but it looks as though it will be changeable andunsettled. It will certainly be here until the end of next week though.”
Meanwhile, it was revealed yesterday that Doreen Lawrence – the mother of murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence – will be one of the torchbearers carrying the Olympic flame.
Doreen, 59, will carry the flame on July 23 as the torch relay winds its way through London ahead of the opening ceremony on July 27.
She will carry the flame to the Stephen Lawrence Centre in Deptford, south-east London. It was set up in memory of her son as a base forcommunity learning and development.
