The governing board of Ghana’s anti-drug agency, the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB), has been dissolved.

No official reason has been given for the decision of president John Dramani Mahama, to dissolve the board.

But the dissolution follows brazen exportation of 12.5 kilograms of cocaine through the Kotoka International Airport by a Ghanaian/Austrian lady, Nayele Ametefeh.

She was arrested by port security at Heathrow Airport in London on November 10 this year with the drugs in her hand luggage.

Following public outcry over the brazen nature of her act and suspicions of official complicity, NACOB issued a statement signed by its Deputy Executive Secretary, Richard Nii Lante Blankson, saying, “it is worthy to note that Ms. Nayele Ametefe travelled on an Austrian passport number P4187659 and not on Ghanaian Diplomatic passport as being speculated. She also had in her possession an ordinary Ghanaian passport number G0364497 issued on 3rd August, 2012.”

The statement claimed that Nayele “was arrested on the 10th of November, 2014 through the collaborative effort of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) and its British partners.”

But this was doubted by many including Communications Minister Dr. Edward Omane who said, until proven otherwise, he didn't believe the claims of NACOB were true.

The president followed this up with the dissolution of NACOB's governing board. 

According to a release issued by the Chief of Staff Prosper Bani, further actions "will follow in due course".
