Ghanaian actor extraordinaire, Majid Michel was on Sunday night crowned Favourite West African Actor at the 2011 edition of the Screen Nation Awards at the Indigo O2, Peninsular Square, London. Majid beat off stiff competition from fellow Ghanaian actor John Dumelo and Nigeria's Mike Ezuruonye, Osita Iheme, Ramsey Noah and Hakeem Kae Kazim to win the award. This is the first time Africa is receiving nominations at the prestigious awards which has been at the forefront of acknowledging the best in Black-British talent for over seven years. The awards has been christened the UK Black Oscars. Founded by renowned film producer, Charles Thompson MBE, and powered by the Screen Nation Foundation, the awards' primary aim is to acknowledge the achievements of those in the industry over the course of 12 months. In all, 22 categories were awarded on the night including Diversity in Drama Production, Favourite Urban Movie, Cinema Director, Favourite International Film (US), Favourite Male Screen Personality (US Film/TV) and Favourite Female Screen Personality (US Film/TV). It was Africa’s nominations – with nominations from only West Africa - that were the high point of the awards. It was a competition between two of Africa’s fiercest rivals – Ghana and Nigeria. Nigeria’s Omotola Jolade beat Ghana’s Ama K Abebrese, who was crowned Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 2011 Zimbabwean International Film Festival (ZIIF) last week, and Jackie Appiah, and fellow Nigerians Funke Akindele, Genevieve Nnaji and Mercy Johnson to win Favourite West African Actress. For the Favourite West African Film category, it was Nigeria’s The Mirror Boy that stood tall against competitions from Ghanaian films, Perfect Picture and Sinking Sands and fellow Nigeria’s Ije, Inale, and The Figurine. The 2011 Screen Nation Awards among its awards awarded Special Honorary to Sir Trevor McDonald OBE; Edric Connor, Inspiration Award; Clarke Peters, Outstanding Contribution Award; Amanda Foster, Vanguard in Stunt work; Burning an Illusion, Classic Movie Award; and The Real McCoy, Classic TV Series Award.
