An unemployed young man suspected to be a drug addict, has been remanded in prison custody by the Akyem Oda District Magistrate's Court for allegedly murdering his 70-year-old grandmother.The accused, Kwaku Agyenim Boateng, aged 22, was said to have hit the neck of the old lady with a pestle resulting in her death.Boateng, whose plea was not taken, will reappear before the court presided over by Mr Albert Annor-Owusu on May 27, 2010.Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Adelaide Appiah-Korang of the Oda Police said the accused was staying in the same house with the deceased at Akyem Abenase in the Akyemmmansa District in the Eastern Region.He said around 5.30 p.m. on March 3, 2010, the deceased returned home from farm and saw Boateng quarrelling with his mother and advised him to stop what he was doing, since the mother had suffered to bring him up.Chief lnspector Appiah-Korang said the advice did not go down well with the accused, so he picked a pestle lying on the compound and cruelly hit the back of her neck with it.She said the old woman fell down unconscious and the scream by the occupants of the house attracted many people to the scene.According to her, some members of the Abenase Unit Committee rushed the deceased to the Oda Government Hospital where the medical officer on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.A report was immediately made to the Oda Police leading to the arrest of the suspect.Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue of the Oda Government Hospital awaiting autopsy.Source: Daily Graphic
