The Adabraka Police have arrested a 64 year old man for impersonating as a Joy FM reporter.
The suspect whose real name is Ato Benson is said to have been using the name Andy deGraft Johnson to swindle unsuspecting members of the public. He is alleged to have also collected money and various items from people in the name of Joy FM.
According to one of the victims, who manages a school in Accra, the self-styled journalist had informed her that former President Rawlings and the wife would be visiting the School together with the leader of the Christo Asafo Church, Apostle kwadwo Safo to make a donation.
She said she had to go through pains taking the little kids through rehearsals in preparation for the ‘big event’.
“When he was leaving he asked of T & T (transportation)”, she alleged. She told Joy News she was made to prepare food and drinks for the guests as well as money for journalists who will be covering the presentation.
Meanwhile, the Adabraka police say Ato Benson has been charged and is being processed for court on Wednesday.
Corporal Bright Kwabena Danso, Acting Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, told Joy News' Anna Agyepong that the suspect has been charged for impersonating and defrauding by false pretence.
Ato Benson has admitted to the offence in an interview with Joy News: “I said that I was working with Joy FM which is not true…I was just making a cheap popularity.”
He however denied taking money from the people.
