A former Board Member of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation has blamed recent ‘blunders’ of the National Broadcaster on serious “managerial turmoil.”
Prof. Kwame Karikari told Joy News’ Evans Mensah the state broadcaster has “serious management instability in the last decade” culminating in the poor performance in recent times.
His comments come just a day after the state broadcaster failed to telecast live the maiden address of President John Evans Mills to the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday despite assurances to the public it would.
They had earlier played hoax on soccer lovers after they failed to telecast Black Stars’ matches against Zambia in England and against Japan in Holland.
Incensed with the blunders, officials at the Information have instituted a four man committee to investigate the causes of the no-shows and present a report in just a week.
Before the details of the report, Prof Kwame Karikari has suggested among other things, a complete overhaul of the institution.
He suspects the problem may partly be blamed on poor technical and engineering shortcomings, one he finds difficult to fathom, given the huge investment into the institution.
“Even if it is a technical engineering problem, I am not too sure that with the technology as it is today, and with the technical resources that GBC ought to have, because of the previous government generous funding, I am not sure GBC can have an excuse of a technical problem, making it impossible for them to upload and broadcast live a piece from the United Nation’s HQ in New York.
He also expressed concern on the seemingly poor quality of programming, blaming it on the loss of experienced staff.
“I think it is time and long overdue for a complete overhaul,” he added.
Attempts to get the Director General, William Ampem Darko, to respond to the concerns failed, as Joy News learnt he was in a meeting with Board Members.
