Ghanaian boxer Duke Micah won by majority decision against Mexico’s Jose Gonzalez on Saturday night to retain his WBC international bantamweight title.
Micah, 26, won the bout 96-94 on two judges' scorecards, while the third scored it as a 95-95 draw at the Resort World Casino in Queens, New York.
The clash was the Ghanaian’s first defence of the belt – he won the belt last March when he stopped Jonathan Aguilar in the seventh round.
Micah started the fight very well, and he landed some telling punches. However, Gonzalez counted on his ring experience and he warmed himself into the fight very well.
The Mexican gave Micah a good run for his money but the James Town native claimed the victory to maintain his undefeated record.
Micah record after the famous win reads 21-0, 18 KO’s.
Also on the night, another Ghanaian, Frederick Lawson (26-1, 21 KO’s) proved too strong for his opponent Fidel Munoz as he stopped him in round three.
The win was Lawson’s second in 2017 after returning from an injury (Jaw injury) he suffered in 2015 when he fought Canada’s Kevin Bezier.
