Eighteen year old, Mildred Akuba Mamikyi Afoh Edoukou was on Saturday crowned Miss Ghana UK 2011 at the plush Troxy, one of London’s most versatile venues.
Mildred who has Nzema and Ashanti-Akyem roots, beat 13 other hopefuls at the star studded event which saw Ghanaian and Chelsea star, Michael Essien and the reigning African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) Actress of the year, Ama K. Abebrese in attendance.
The event which was hosted by Chris Attoh and Kwaku Owusu Frimpong, brought to light Ghana’s rich and colourful culture.
Contestants Zara Nortey and Edma Lawer were the first and second runners-up respectively.
Ghanaian artistes D Cryme, 4x4 and R&M, were at their best on the night treating patrons to exciting tunes that shook the venue. It was as if the pageant was being held in Ghana.
The Miss Ghana UK contest which started about half a decade ago is aimed at rasing Ghana’s rich cultural background and heritage while placing great emphasis on Ghanaian attributes and lifestyles in the UK and abroad.
As at the close of the contest and the subsequent declaration of the winners, prizes for the winners were not announced and presented.
A source told Myjoyonline.com after the event that organisers were not able to announce and even present the prizes due to reasons beyond their control.
The source however said the prizes will range from free trips to Ghana and free make up and hair vouchers among others.
Last year's winner, Sharon Sarpong, was also at the event to hand over the crown to her successor, Mildred Akuba Mamikyi.
