National Democratic Congress delegates voted massively for Preesident Mills in a lopsided contest for the flagbearership of the ruling party.
The president polled a massive 2,771 votes, representing 96.9 per cent of a total of 2,861 valid votes cast.
Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings polled 90 votes or 3.1 per cent of valid votes.
The Electoral Commission supervised the ballots.
President Mills called the results "no victory" for any individual but that with the contest over, the battle for 2012 has begun and called for unity.
He said perhaps the only losers are those who wished the contest had been bloody, but he was humbled by the massive show of support.
Moment after the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at the Electoral Commission, Kwadwo Sarfo Kantanka, officially declared President Mills as the winner of the election, former President Rawlings walked up to President Mills and lifted his left hand up to tumultuous cheers from his supporters, signifying his acceptance of the results.
The former President, followed by his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who contested Prof. Mills, fizzled out of the scene, even before Prof. Mills could deliver his acceptance speech.
In his speech, President Mills took time to congratulate Nana Konadu for giving him a "good fight" and also helping to unearth challenges facing the party which were taken for granted.
The President assured members of the party that certain issues raised during the campaign period would not be "swept under the carpet", stressing, "honestly" that they would be addressed.
President Mills called on all to ensure that peace and unity prevailed in the party because they are one family, and urged them to rather take the fight to the NDC's political opponents.
He therefore asked them to avoid name calling, insults, bickering and divisive tendencies that would affect the fortunes of the party in 2012.
He pledged to work harder as the leader of the NDC, assuring members that the "future is bright" for the party.
