Members of Parliament expect president John Atta Mills to use today's State of the Nation Address to heal a hugely polarised nation.
New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Wenchi, Prof. George Gyan Baffour, said the nation was sharply divided along political lines and Mills should try to bring the people together by presenting conciliatory message.
"There is extreme partisanship in the country today," he told Joy FM's Super Morning Show.
Mr Enoch Teye Mensah (NDC) MP for Ningo Prampram, agreed.
He said the polarisation had reached such alarming levels that persons fingered for wrong doing quickly pled political witch-hunt and got people to rally to their defence.
He cited the NPP radio panelist, Nana Darkwa who alleged that former president Rawlings torched his house on Valentines Day 2010.
Mr Mensah placed the blame for the intense partisanship on the media, citing the Twi speaking radio stations as the worst offenders.
He people allowed to make all kinds reckless statements on the local language speaking station, warning the consequences of this behaviour could be dire.
According to him, Ghanaians must learn from the bitter experiences of Rwanda where "one reckless statement by somebody in a radio station resulted in violence that" claimed the lives of many.
He said although the president had been consistently maligned and insulted, he had not responded in like manner, noting that that ought to serve as an example.
Veering off from the subject of partisanship and divisive politics, Prof. Gyan Baffour said he expected the president to candid and truthful in his presentation.
He said the president paints a rosy picture about the state of affairs in the country which is variance with the actual living conditions of the people, he will lose credibility.
"He should just be honest with the people," he stated.
The president will be, Mr ET Mensah supplied.
He insists the president has done well in the past three years and the president will highlight those achievements.
