Officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs say they are sending a team of investigators to look into the alleged killing of eight Ghanaians off the coast of Senegal.
The Daily Guide newspaper reported on Monday that the victims were murdered in late July while on board a fishing boat destined for Spain and their bodies reportedly thrown overboard.
The story came to light after the family of one of the survivors contacted Ghana’s Embassy in The Netherlands. The survivor is reportedly stranded in Senegal.
The alleged killings come two years after 44 Ghanaian travelers were allegedly killed in the Gambia. Human rights groups and family members of the victims have been putting pressure on the government to get to the bottom of it.
The Director of Legal and Consular Bureau at the Ministry, Mr. Eric Odoi Anim, told Joy News’ Matilda Asante about steps being taken to ascertain the allegations and said investigating such matters could be time consuming and called for restraint.
