The Minority Caucus has outlined urgent measures to address Ghana’s inclusion on the US visa freeze list, describing it as a direct consequence of Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s mismanagement.
The press briefing was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, by Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh.
“The President must deploy a special envoy to Washington without delay,” he said. “We need someone with the authority, credibility, and respect to negotiate our removal from this list. Waiting for normal channels will cost Ghana dearly.”
Nana Asafo-Adjei also criticised Ghana’s Ambassador to the US, stating, “Our Ambassador, Victor Emmanuel Smith, seems more focused on press statements than protecting Ghana’s interests. This is a dereliction of duty at a critical moment for our citizens and economy.”
He added, “We must mobilise ECOWAS, AU, and EU partners and engage Congress directly. Every day we delay, billions of dollars in remittances are at risk, families suffer, and our diplomatic credibility erodes further.”
The Minority concluded with a strong warning: “This is not partisan politics. This is about national survival. Ghana deserves competent diplomacy, not showmanship. President Mahama must act now before more damage is done.”
