Joy FM has been inundated with complaints of negligence by nurses at the Ridge Hospital following a report it broadcast on the death of a pregnant woman as a result neglect by the nurses. The station received calls and text messages from people who say they suffered similar treatment from the nurses in the hospital. One of the callers narrated how his pregnant wife was told in the face by a nurse that the doctor was sick and that nothing could be done to help her. He said the nurse instructed them to get a taxi and go to the 37 Military Hospital for medical attention. Another caller gave a sad story of how his only child died because of the negligence of the nurses. Joy News on Wednesday broadcast the story of a woman, Margaret Nartey who was pregnant with twins and died when nurses at the Ridge Hospital failed to give her the prescribed medication and care because of verbal exchanges her sister and one of the nurses on duty. She had been referred to the Ridge Hospital from the Amasaman Government Hospital on May 20, 2008 but died on May 26, after delivering one of the twins dead. Her husband Herold Kofihene blamed the death of Margret on the negligence of the nurses. He told Joy News that “The medicine and the food that was [supposed to be] given to Margaret they didn’t give it to her”. Although the head of obstetrics and gynecology at the Ridge Hospital Dr. Emmanuel Sorofonyor denied that the deceased died as a result of negligence, many complaints have poured into the station accusing the nurses of negligence. Speaking to the issue, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Elias Sori said the allegations were being investigated and that anybody found culpable will be dealt with according to the rules of the service.
