Mr Tony Afenyo, Proprietor of Saint Mary's International School at Ashaiman, says it is important for the government to motivate teachers to enable them to give off their best. He said given the right motivation, teachers would work hard to help raise the falling standards of their pupils. Mr Afenyo told the GNA in an interview that lack of pupil-teacher interaction, large children population, lack of children's motivation and inadequate infrastructure were some of the causes of falling educational standards. He suggested that a transport and housing scheme be instituted for teachers to make them mobile and decently accommodated. For example, he said part of teachers' social security contributions should be utilized to provide them with decent accommodation. On the Shift System in schools, Mr Afenyo said it was a major disadvantage to the performance of children, especially in public schools. According to him, most pupils in public schools hid behind the system to loiter instead of going to school. The system, he said, deprived children in public schools of adequate contact hours with their teachers, appealling to the government to build more classrooms to end the shift system. Source: GNA
