Government has invited the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers and the National Association of Graduate Teachers to a crunch meeting tomorrow at the Flagstaff House in an attempt to avert a possible strike action on Monday. In statement signed by Mahama Ayariga, Minister of Information and Media Relations, government said it is concerned by the decision of the two bodies to embark on an indefinite strike action. It however noted: “Government wishes to assure the public that serious consideration shall be given to the issues raised by the unions to avert any disruption of the examination process. Students and parents are therefore entreated to focus on their preparation for the exams without any anxiety,”. Below is the statement Government is concerned about the decision of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) to embark on an indefinite strike action when senior high school students are writing the West African Senior Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and pupils of the basic schools are preparing to write the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE). Government wishes to assure the public that serious consideration shall be given to the issues raised by the unions to avert any disruption of the examination process. Students and parents are therefore entreated to focus on their preparation for the exams without any anxiety. Meanwhile, the leadership of GNAT and NAGRAT are being invited to a meeting with the relevant sector ministers and heads of some government agencies at the Flagstaff House at 8 am tomorrow, Sunday, the 17th of March, 2013 to amicably resolve the issues.
