The Eastern Regional Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) has issued a three-month ultimatum to drivers of commercial vehicles using private number plates to rectify the anomaly or face the full rigours of the law.
The unit made a specific reference to drivers of the newly acquired urban buses which it said are engaged in the practice.
Briefing the GNA after a meeting with stakeholders in the transport business in Koforidua on Thursday, Mr James Sarfo-Peprah, Regional MTTU Police Commander, explained that the insurance cover of the vehicles favors only the car owners to the detriment of passengers.
According to him, cars with private number plates are not comprehensively insured.
Mr Sarfo-Peprah said according to road traffic regulations, commercial vehicles are required to have an insurance package that would favour all passengers on board in case of accident, adding, the measure is not peculiar to the region alone.
Some of the drivers who spoke to GNA claimed they did not know the relevance of the type of insurance policies covering their vehicles and pledged to streamline the situation.
