The Former First Lady, N ana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has snubbed the Enquirer's attempt to interview her on the choice of Mr. John Mahama as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress, saying that she is "nobody".
The News Editor of the Enquirer had met the former First Lady at the Coconut Grove Hotel last Wednesday and had wanted to use the opportunity to seek the view of the former First Lady on John Mahama's selection but she quickly retorted "Did you talk to your boss (apparently referring to Raymond Archer, the Editor-in-Chief of the Enquirer) before coming to see me, your boss who says I am nobody, yes I am nobody".
"Madam, Please, I don't understand", the News Editor told Mrs. Rawlings. She again replied "You don't understand, you said you wanted an interview and I am saying that the head of the Enquirer said I am nobody, so I am not granting the interview."
She continued "didn't you listen to Radio Gold's Programme 'Alhaji and Alhaji'? Your boss said I am nobody".
"I didn't hear that Madam", the News Editor said. But the former first lady quickly hit back "You didn't hear that, well I have it on CD and I would get it for you to listen" As soon as Mrs. Rawlings said that she dashed into her waiting car and left the News Editor standing dumbfounded.
Apparently, Mrs. Rawlings was not happy with comments made by Editor-In-Chief of The Enquirer on the April 5 edition of Alhaji and Alhaji, regarding her loud and vitriolic attack on the possible choice of John Mahama as the running mate of Prof. Mills.
But Mr. Archer says he stands by his opinion saying that Nana Konadu's conduct of hopping from one radio station to the other was unnecessary, adding that she was just having fun destroying the NDC because she couldn't have her way.
Mr. Archer said that the audacity of insolence of the former first lady to attack Prof. Mills and John Mahama was not just condemnable but portrayed her as a very intolerant person.
Mr. Archer insisted that as far he is concerned, if it comes to making political judgment he felt that Konadu was less competent than Prof. Mills.
"Look at the Two. The man is a Prof., a lawyer, a lecturer and tax expert, he was a former boss of Ghana Internal Revenue Service, he was one time former Vice President, How can Nana Konadu with only a degree in textiles from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology say that she was more capable of making a better judgment than Prof. Mills".
Mr. Archer continued that Mrs. Rawlings could easily pass as a student of the Prof. and so the fact that her husband appointed him as Vice President did not give her any leverage to talk at the Prof. anyhow.
Mr. Archer said, "I have a feeling that the Rawlings' are developing some superiority complex which may eventually erase any shred of respect and admiration they command from many Ghanaians if they continue on this path."
"Former President Rawlings handed over power nicely and the whole world applauded him for saving Ghana's democracy when it mattered most. If you look at intelligence reports from many of the western countries, they all admit that he saved Ghana's democracy. If I were him, I will be content with that because not many African head of States have that record. He should hold on to the support base for the NDC and leave the leadership of the party to bring on the rest of votes needed for the party," Mr. Archer added.
Mr. Archer said, if Konadu can't tolerate his comments then "too bad.
If she cannot take comment, then I wonder what Kufour and the host of government appointees should do to The Enquirer. For all these years we have scrutinized this government and its officials, we have put their conduct under very strict microscope so if she won't talk to The Enquirer because I criticized her conduct, so be it, if she conducts herself in the same manner, I will speak my mind."
