The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), is asking government to lift the curfew on Gushegu in the Northern Region. Chairman of the Commission, Mr Larry Bimi, is convinced residents in the area will not engage in violent clashes if the year-old curfew imposed on the town is lifted. “We have ensured that there is no problem in Gushegu again and I can assure any person that if the curfew in Gushegu is lifted, people will go about their normal duties,” he said. According to Mr. Bimi, the NCCE has engaged the two factions in the area in reconciliation talks and significant progress has been made since the clashes last year. He told Joy News an early warning system implemented in Gushegu could be replicated in Bawku to ensure lasting peace. The NCCE chairman is currently in Bawku meeting with identifiable groups to seek their support to facilitate for his peace plan. “We have already identified a number of leaders on both sides. We’re going to talk to them on the quiet and they have agreed we make it public,” he said. Gushegu has been in the news in recent times after violent clashes there claimed several lives. Although there have been efforts to restore the peace, among them changing the curfew times, observers are still skeptical about sustained peace if the curfew on the town is lifted. With the latest assurance from the NCCE boss however, if the curfew on the area is lifted, it will be a major test of the commitment of the people to peace.
