The governing National Democratic Congress is dealing with a possible case of a bloated biometric register and other irregularities ahead of its upcoming presidential and parliamentary primaries.
There are bickering by some top members of the party, including Members of Parliament who claim the register has been flooded with strangers.
The issue is raising tension in parts of the country, Joy News has learnt.
In Afram Plains South, reports indicate the register has 8,000 names when there are only 7,000 registered members of the NDC.
One of the aspiring Members of Parliament, Eric Osei Wusu, who is also CEO of the Buffer Stock Company is claiming the names of members in specific communities have been struck out to favour the incumbent MP.
"A lot of people were left out; a lot of people have been disenfranchised and this has caused a lot of problems. A lot of them registered but their names have been taken out and they blame the constituency executives for that," he said.
In the Asunafo North Constituency, some youth allegedly snatched the voters register away from the party’s office last week during exhibition.
They alleged the register contained names that needed not to be there. They held on to it for several hours until the police and opinion leaders in the community intervened.
"We were doing the exhibition and at a point in time the youth took the register from the office. They didn't understand what was happening," Constituency Secretary Armah Imoro narrated.
He admitted the register has a problem, but said the concerns are being resolved.
As a result of these challenges the party is considering a postponement of the primaries set for November 7.
Some Members of Parliament who spoke to Joy News' Parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey said the party is considering either 14 or 21 November as new date for the primaries.
The proposed postponement is to allow the party to clean the register and get rid of the strangers on it.
Speaking to Joy News' Evans Mensah on the matter, the Director of Elections for the party Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said claims of a bloated register has been exaggerated by the media.
He said out of the 275 Constituencies made up of 26,000 polling stations only few have challenges with the register and the party is busily auditing it.
He explained the process is a novel one and would have some of these challenges.
He said the party has sent a name deletion and name addition forms to branch executives to delete the strangers on the register and add those members who were left out.
He indicated the exercise is going on smoothly but would not confirm if the party has decided to postpone the primaries.
