The 8th National Delegates' Congress of the ruling NDC has ended peacefully with major forces thought to be at each other's throat singing unity songs.
And after closing remarks by President John Evans Mills, delgates and followers of various contestants simply poured out of the West Africa Examination Council Hall and unto the streets of Tamale singing songs the party has scored high marks given pre-congress fears that violence was inevitable.
The Congress saw the election of a mixed bag of so called pro-Rawlings and pro-Mills loyalists to man the affairs of the party for the next four years.
Wife of former president Rawlings, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings won the First Vice-Chairmanship position by about 1,433 out of 1900 voters.
Other so called Rawlings loyalists such as Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, Alhaji Saeed Sinare won vice chairman positions.
Kofi Poturphy and Danny Annan won the remaining two Vice-Chairmanship slots to complete the set of six vice-chairmen.
Pro-Mills Dr Kwabena Adjei and Johnson Asiedu Nketia, retained their Chairman and General Secretary positions respectively.
For the position of Propaganda Secretary, Richard Quashigah, with 1,270 votes beat his contenders, Bernard K. Allotey and Mustapha Kabila who got 439 and 114 votes respectively.
At 8:20am Sunday, vote counting is still in progress for most of the positions being contested, among them six elective positions for vice chairperson. Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is among 18 contenders for the slots.
Mr. Kamel Loshie, with 1501 votes emerged winner of the contest for Treasurer, beating Adisa Abdul Usif who obtained 351 votes. Two ballots were rejected.
