The Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Malik Kweku Baako, says the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is committing a political suicide by failing to rein in its errant supporters.
He said the “constitutional lawlessness” being unleashed on Ghanaians by disgruntled, disillusioned and dissatisfied youth of the ruling party had very serious negative consequences for the country’s peace and stability.
Mr Malik Baako was contributing to a discussion on the rancorous seizures of state institutions and physical attacks on government appointees by some youth of the NDC, on Joy FM’s news analysis programme, Newsfile on Saturday, September 11, 2010.
He reminded the NDC youth that they were, through their conduct, making the party increasingly unattractive to first, the middle class who want to have a tranquil life and secondly, Ghanaians in general.
“Nobody has the right to physically attack public institutions and public appointees, [no matter their grievances against such institutions or individuals]” he asserted.
Mr Kweku Baako said it was about time the security agencies in the country asserted themselves and applied the law to all persons regardless of their political affiliation.
He emphasized the need for persons whose conduct bordered on criminality to be made to answer for their actions.
“There is a specific category of people who are misbehaving and must be identified and dealt with,” he noted.
A former Communications Director of the NDC, Mr Seth Ofori contributing to the topic, said the behavior of the youth was symptomatic of the failure of the nation to its youth.
He said the youth were, through their conduct, making a loud political statement, although their methods were objectionable.
Mr Ofori stressed the need for the nation to re-examine its strategies of addressing youth concerns.
For him, the youth need to be provided with skills and credit to set up sustainable business to better their lot.
