An Ashaiman assembly member, Mr Thomas Adongo has said he was beaten by men wielding machetes and guns on Monday.
Speaking to Joy News, Mr Adongo said he was accosted by the armed men at about 4 pm on Monday when he was returning from work. He sustained deep cut to his head and body.He accused the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Mr Alfred Agbesi of masterminding the attack.Mr Adongo also accused the MP of manipulating the Ashaiman police but the police rejected the allegations. But the MP has denied knowledge of the incident.Speaking to Joy News in his hide-out, Mr Adongo alleged that two weeks ago Mr Agbesi came to his house with 15 bodyguards to warn him to stop meddling in a dispute over a parcel of land. He alleged that days after the MP sent his men to assault him.He said they came with “complicated weapons” and had to fall on people in the neighbourhood for help. Mr Adongo said he and the MP are at odds over the ownership of a market at Roman Down, a suburb of Ashaiman. Furthermore, he alleged that the MP has given the land to his relative even though the Tema Municipal Assembly has earmarked the place for a market. The woman owning the land claims she bought the land from the former assembly member. She is building a school building on the land despite a court order to stop work.Mr. Adongo said he has been threatened over the land on several occasions and the police are doing nothing about it.“I believe for sure that the …police are aware and they have talked to the MP and they know what the MP has done for them so they have decided to neglect their duty to come to my rescue,” he said.Meanwhile, Mr Agbesi told Joy News he cannot remember having any confrontation with Mr Adongo over a land issue. On the alleged attacks on Monday night, the MP pleaded alibi.“Yesterday I was not in town. What he is saying is a fabrication and I believe he is fighting over his own bad and wick deeds. I don’t have anything doing with him,” he disclosed.Mr Agbesi also denied selling a land meant for a market to his relative.
