The ruling National Democratic Congress is planning an elaborate ceremony to commemorate the June 4 uprising which thrust former president Rawlings into the political limelight.
Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, then a junior army officer staged his first coup on June 4, 1979 promising accountability to the people.
During his 19 year rule as head of state, the day was marked with parades and as an importance remembrance day.
But the New Patriotic Party government under Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor cancelled the celebration saying it was an affront to the country’s democracy.
Having returned to power in the last elections, the NDC says the president must give the proposal to have the day marked nationally a serious thought.
A special aide to former president Rawlings, Kofi Adams, told Joy News the day is so important to the party to be ignored by the president.
He believes it will not be out of place if the president declares the day a national holiday.
The day, he said must be marked as a day of accountability.
“It is our prayer with the administration in place now the ideals of June 4, will come to stay, the ideals of probity and accountability will come stay.
“We in the NDC hold June Fourth dear to our hearts,” he stated.
