About 10,000 in mates of physically challenge institutions across the country have been insured under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
This government noted, formed part of its social democratic agenda to ensure that the venerable, under-privileged are all within the social safety net of health care. The NHIA carried out the mass registration across psychiatric hospitals, leprosarium and other institutions.
A breakdown of the beneficiary institutions include the Ankaful leprosarium 119, Bole leprosarium 11, Chosen Psychiatric Rehabilitation Centre 82, Kokofu leprosarium 40, Ho Lepers Committee 402, Upper West 451 East Gonja District 209 Pantang psychiatric 254 Sesepa Psychiatric 7,523 Yendi leprosarium 5, West Mamprusi 18, East Mamprusi 12, Sawla Tula Kaba 14 and Northern region 106.
Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA Sylvester Mensah made this known when the Authority on Monday, presented 711cards to the inmates of the Accra psychiatric hospital.
Mr. Mensah enumerated that the “NHIS today is healthier than it was in December 2008.
“Confidence in the scheme is higher than it was in December 2008, utilization today is higher than it was in December 2008”, Mr. Mensah stated.
He stressed that health insurance is having relatively higher value in money and has accounted for more than 80% of internally generated funds in all public facilities in the country.
He emphasized that membership of the NHIA is high and increasing every day, while his outfit has instituted an internal audit regime that will ensure that claims processing is given maximum attention at the processing centers.
He announced that “the authority is currently working towards electronic claims processing which will commence in the last quarter of the year with the hope that by next year over 50% of claims across the country will be submitted electronically”.
