The Volta Regional minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo has summoned feuding factions to a Regional Security Council (REGSEC) meeting to resolve the protracted conflict. There has been heightened tension after the murder of an elderly man at Alavanyo last Thursday. The deceased, Koku Teyi, was reportedly shot in the chest at his home but died on reaching the Margaret Marquart Hospital at Kpando. In a retaliatory attack, a 30-year-old Nkonya man, Kofi Donkor, was also reportedly shot last saturday and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital. No suspect has been picked up yet. The clashes between the two communities led to an imposition of a curfew by the Interior minister,Kwesi Ahwoi. This is adversely affecting farming and fishing activities in the towns. But, a resident in the area has said "although the curfew is affecting all our businesses,it is better to live in peace" In a bid to resolve the conflict, the Volta Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo told Joynews, that "being a royal from the Greater Accra region, I know what brings about some of these problems". He has therefore pledged to use his background to persuade the chiefs and opinion leaders in the two communities to allow peace to prevail. The Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict is a protracted issue over land that has spanned several decades since 1923.
