The Ho Municipal Assembly has banned excessive noise making in the municipality, beyond 10 pm.
The decision followed complaints from section of the public who say the noise levels are no longer tolerable.
The directive affects churches and mosques. It also affects drinking bars, corn mill and sawmill operators. The rest are hawkers and individuals, who have been warned they must desist from making ‘excessive noise’ deep into the night.
Chief Executive Officer at the municipality Fafa Adinyira at a stakeholders forum, revealed the assembly’s office has been inundated with complaints from residents about the disturbing noise level in the area.
She said the assembly will soon begin enforcing the laws on noise making. Volta Regional Manager of the Environmental Protection Agency, Togbe Akliku Ahorney, appealed to night club operators to install sound proof systems, and also ensure the noise generated is confined within the club.
A human rights activists Kofi Tenasu Gbedemah, was of the opinion excessive noise in the churches could kill worshipers, stressing he was not against churches but said the noise generated affects both the sick and aged.
But Reverend Robert Kwao, Volta Regional Chairman of Ghana Pentecostal and Christian Churches (GPCC), said churches did not make noise deliberately to make others uncomfortable. He said they are sensitive to the concerns from society and will therefore abide by the directive not to extend the noise beyond 10 pm.
