Government says it has no intention of repossessing lands acquired by foreigners in the Cape Three Points communities in the Western Region.
It says although there have been suggestions for government to negotiate with such land owners and reclaim lands “in the interest of the state,” that is not a move the state intends to pursue now.
“The president is not saying that we are going to claim land from anybody or claim land that has already been bought,” Director of Communications at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho told Joy FM on Monday.
He said rather “what the president is saying is that government will move in to protect land” for the purposes of citing petrochemical industries.
President Mills is reported to have declared in Sekondi that government would reclaim large swaths of land purchased by non-Ghanaians around the oil zones.
That was when the president made a stop in the town as part of his four-day tour of the Western and Brong Ahafo Regions.
The chiefs and people of the area have in earlier interactions with the media asked for more negotiation as these lands are being used for commercial activities, contrary to agreements reached with the chiefs.
