The New Patriotic Party is accusing the ruling government of being hypocritical on the issue of ethnicity in Ghanaian politics. Whilst it acknowledges that a recent remark by its Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong was intemperate, the party insisted the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) cannot ride a moral high horse and accuse the NPP of sparking ethnic tension in the country. That can only be hypocritical, the NPP asserted at a press conference held, Monday. The press conference was in response to a similar one held by the NDC following the controversial ethnic comments made by the NPP MP, Kennedy Agyapong who is facing charges of terrorism, genocide and high treason. Hours after the NPP press conference, Nana Akomea, Head of Communications for the party told Joy News the NDC has a lot to answer for in terms of divisive ethnic comments and cannot play the innocent. Akomea cited a litany of examples, scoffing what he said were double standards and hypocrisy being exhibited by the NDC. “The NDC worry about “Yɛn Akanfo” to wit “We Akans”, a remark that the leader of the NPP has made but they do not mention “Adze wɔ fie oye” to wit “it is better to follow your kinsman” or that Kufuor is not from here so he cannot care for us, or "the great Ashanti project" which was reported in wikileaks, they do not worry about that," he charged. He explained that the chronicling of intemperate language by functionaries of the NDC is not to settle scores or for purposes of political equalization but rather to draw the attention of the police to be fair and be true to its mandate of maintaining peace and ensuring law and order. He lamented what he said was police inertia and failure to arrest an NDC gun man who was captured on video shooting into a crowd of NPP supporters at Chereponi, during a bye election. Nana Akomea said the NPP has taken in good faith recent comments by the IGP and hoped he will restore confidence in all Ghanaians. But in a response the Propaganda Secretary of the NDC, Richard Quarshigah said he is scandalized by the comments by the NPP. According to him, the information being peddled by Nana Akomea at the press conference is incorrect, appalling and nauseating. He said instead of condemning the “uncomplimentary remarks” made by Kennedy Agyapong, the NPP is rather glorifying him. Quarshigah insisted the NPP must desist from using Atiwa as an example of intimidation against supporters of the NPP because comments by the NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo show that it is rather the NPP who were on rampage during the Atiwa bye-election.
