The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is threatening court action against the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) over what he describes as a politically-motivated demolition exercise at Sukura and other suburbs of Accra.The AMA has earmarked for demolition over 140 unauthorized structures allegedly sited on watercourses, saying it is part of a plan to avert flooding in the national capital.But NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, also known as Sir John, says the exercise is a calculated attempt by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to make life unbearable for supporters of the main opposition party.Speaking on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM, Mr. Owusu-Afriyie said he would go to court to stop the demolition exercise.He cited the AMA’s refusal to demolish structures in Sodom and Gomorrah only to head to Sukura and other NPP strongholds to pull down buildings.It’s up to affected residentsHowever, speaking to Joy News on Wednesday, Mr Owusu Afriyie said he has no plans to go to court now but rather expects residents who have been affected to go to the courts and place an injunction on the demolitions.“It is not for me to go to court, I believe that the individuals whose houses have been demolished or about to be demolished ought to go to court and get and injunction to stop the AMA from behaving the way that they are doing,” he said.Mr Afriyie believes the AMA’s approach to dealing with the flooding situation in the national is wrong.According to him, there are several countries elsewhere in the developed world that are faced with the problem of flooding but demolishing buildings has never been an option in solving the problem.He added that the problem is not limited to Accra but also in Kumasi where the metropolitan assembly is collapsing buildings in areas thought to be NPP strongholds.“Where they believe that they have nothing to lose but to move on and demolish, I have a problem.
