The Sunyani Traditional Council has opened disciplinary proceedings against the New Patriotic Party’s Regional Chairman for criticizing the Paramount Chief of the region, Nana Asor Nkrawiri II.
The Paramount Chief is reported to have encourage residents to vote massively for President John Mahama in the 2016 general elections.
The chief made the claim during President Mahama’s visit to the region recently.
The NPP Regional Chairman, Kwaku Asamoah Cheremeh in a swift criticism of the chief said Nana Asor Nkrawiri II had stooped to the lowest level in calling on residents to overwhelmingly endorse the president.
He also questioned the chief’s role as a father for the people of the region.
But the Kontihene of Sunyani, Nana Bofotia Boaponsem says Cheremeh's response is unacceptable. He said the NPP man cannot make such disparaging remarks about the chief.
Questioning the chief’s role as a father was most inappropriate to the traditional council, the Kontihene told Joy News’ Precious Semevoh.
“Our main concern is not about anybody criticizing our overlord for what he said. Our concern is about the derogatory and disrespectful remarks made by the chairman of the NPP.
“Saying that the paramount chief has stooped to the lowest level is an insult and an upfront to the dignity of the Omanhene. The man is a real father and casting aspersions on his fatherhood is most unfortunate”, he added.
He questioned why the Regional Chairman did not condemn the Kontihene when he received Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo when he prayed that a year by now the presidential candidate will visit him after he had won the elections.
Nana Boaponsem says Mr Cheremeh will be invited to the chief’s palace and made to explain the reasons behind his comments.
“We have written to the secretary of the party and we are certain that they will make an appearance before the chiefs”.
He told Precious that although the Council has no problem with the NPP or people with opposing view but indicated that whatever is said about the paramount chief of the area must be done constructively.
