With seven NPP presidential aspirants having filed their nominations, Ghana's largest opposition party will now have to shortlist this number to five – using a super delegates conference.
The need to trim down the number is detailed and dictated by the party's constitution after a similar contest in 2007 saw 17 aspirants pick up nomination forms.
The sheer numbers was deemed by many as improper and an orgy for power. The then opposition party, NDC cashed in on the criticism, with its General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia labelling the contest as a contest of thieves.
Fastforward to 2014, seven candidates 2012 flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, former Information minister, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, former Attorney General, Joe Ghartey, Asuogyamang MP, Osei Ameyaw and former Trade minister, Dr. Konadu Apraku, former Trade minister Alan Kyeremanteng and Mampong MP, Addai Nimoh are now contesting the position.
While a steering committee is set to meet and spell out the modalities for the contest, there are concerns that shipping the candidates to a Super Delegates Conference without vetting them could pose a problem for the party. A Super Delegates Conference may not be able to investigate the background or suitability of a candidate as an interview could unearth, if a candidate for example, had an unknown criminal record or a hidden nationality.
"It makes sense" for the candidates to be vetted, Chairman of the party's Constitutional and Legal Affairs committee, Nii Ayikoi Otoo stated.
He told Joy News he would recommend a vetting process to the party leadership. The NPP is expected to choose a flagbearer before the year ends.
