The Eastern Regional Minister Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has expressed worries over the poor nature the Akwapim South Municipal Assembly has been managing its finances over the past years.
He said a study of the Assembly’s financial audit reports shows a clear misappropriation of revenue at the assembly.
He therefore called on the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon O. B. Amoah and the newly confirmed Municipal Chief Executive Dr. Godfred Osei Busu Twum to collaborate and address the situation. He warned that if the situation is not checked, the regional administration would step.
He was addressing a gathering at the confirmation of the government nominee for the position of the Municipal Chief Executive at Nsawam.
Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said there is the need for members of the Akwapim South District Assembly to manage its finances prudently in the face of its available resources.
He said all Assemblies are supposed to play oversight responsibilities in the national developmental process, hence the need to put their resources to good use, adding that they would be responsible and equally blamed for some of the inadequacies in governance.
He advised the assembly to find ways of harnessing the economic potential in the area once the construction of the Accra-Nsawam-Kumasi road is completed.
At the confirmation ceremony, the president’s nominee Dr. Godfred Osei Bonsu Twum polled 47 out of 60 valid votes cast to emerge as the MCE for the Akwapim South Municipal Assembly.
The confirmation was done under heavy police presence to forestall any unforeseen riots by perceived opposing groups of the president’s nominee.
