The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) under the auspice of its Scholarship Board has introduced a policy that serves to ensure financial relief to University students with special needs.
The policy termed “The NUGS Stipends Scheme” is targeted at Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across public universities in Ghana.
Speaking ahead of its official launch on Monday, the initiator, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, the President of NUGS said the project seeks to provide monetary support for students who find it challenging to feed, cloth themselves or buy books.
“The Union in the past months has received a number of students at its secretariat with issues of insufficient resources to maintain a healthy diet and to fulfill other basic needs”, the NUGS President disclosed.
Mr Kyeremeh said from numerous interactions, it had become obvious that there are many students facing similar challenges in the various public universities across the Ghana.
He noted that the issue had become pressing and therefore it was essential for NUGS to come to the aid of such students.
“This project also seeks to support the government’s initiative towards the provision of quality education to the people of Ghana,” Mr Kyeremeh emphasised.
The NUGS President noted that the Sustainable Development Goal 4 talks about attaining quality education.
This, he stated, includes students having peace of mind to focus on their education.
The Stipends Scheme Project, Mr Kyeremeh noted seeks to promote the attainment of the SDG 4.
