Move over Miami, the US home for the international Art Basel art show.
New York City is reclaiming its crown as the centre of the US art scene, courtesy of the inaugural Frieze Art Fair, taking place on Randall’s Island in the city’s East River from 4 to 7 May. The four-day festival is the first US edition of the famous UK festival, which was founded by art powerhouses Amanda Sharp and Matthew Slotover and takes place in London’s Regent’s Park every October.
More than 1,000 artists from 30 countries will show their work in a curving 250,000sqft building designed by Brooklyn architects SO-IL. Add to that eight specially-commissioned outdoor works by artists like Rick Moody and Ulla von Bradenburg, outposts of some of New York’s hippest restaurants — Roberta’s, Fat Radish, The Standard Biergarten — and a star-studded roster of parties, and this oft-overlooked island between Harlem, Astoria and the South Bronx is set to become the hottest spot in the city.
