Some community roads in Aflao in the Ketu South District in the Volta Region are in a state of deterioration.

This came to light when a team from the Public Interest and Accountability Committee [PIAC] and the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists [IFEJ] went on a monitoring tour to ascertain whether projects funded from the oil revenue have been properly executed.

As a result of the tour, sponsored by GIZ, it was found that the Bitumen surfacing of Aflao town roads and Keta roads [2014] constructed at a cost GHS 545,637 were not properly done.

The story was not different with the Bitumen surfacing of Tadzevu –Devego –Agorve Junction feeder roads which were also constructed at a cost of 10,710,586.31.

The situation in Aflao town roads is worse as the work which was awarded in November 2012 to MESSRS OTUBOAT LIMITED and was supposed to be completed in 2014 but revised to be completed in 2016 is still in a very bad and deplorable state.

In an interview, a member of the PIAC team, Affail Monney who is also the president of the Ghana Journalists Association has described as alarming, failure by officials to do a good job on projects funded from the oil resources.

According to him, the roads, particularly, the Aflao town roads which is a gateway to Ghana need to be fixed.

“It is an understatement to say that the Aflao town roads is in a very deplorable state despite the monies allocated to fix them. Something urgent needs to be done about it,” Monney lamented.

He said in other to justify the allocation of resources to these projects, there is the need to tackle previous allocations and ensure the right thing is done.

Monney found it worrying that beneficiaries of the projects were not even aware that the projects were being funded with oil money.

He has advised that everyone in the accountability chain should be aware of the source of funding for the projects.

He said that the team will make sure that the monitoring component of PIAC will be intensified so that the nation will derive its benefits from the oil resources.

The Operations Manager of the department of the feeder roads in the Volta Region, Edward Asenso Kensah in an interview with Joy News revealed that the contractor was not on site.

A warning letter has been issued to him awaiting response.
