Parliament has approved by consensus, the nomination of Gifty Twum-Ampofo as Deputy Education Minister after the Minority withdrew its opposition.
The House has also approved 11 other Deputy Ministers including Mark Okraku Mantey as Deputy Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture.
Last week, the Minority refused to approve Madam Ampofo's nomination over her alleged defence of vote buying. But the house today agreed a consensual approval
Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini objected to her approval, alleging that the nominee was involved in vote buying during the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries, prior to the 2020 general elections.
Gifty Twum-Ampofo subsequently admitted to the allegation when she appeared before the Appointments Committee.
According to Suhuyini, the phenomenon of vote-buying and the monetization of politics in the country detrimental to Ghana’s democratic experiment.
He said, disapproving the nomination of the Deputy Minister for education designate is in the right direction as it would serve as a deterrent to others.
However, both the Majority and Minority on Tuesday, reached a consensus to approve the nomination of Madam Ampofo.
Apart from Mark Okraku Mantey, other Deputy Ministers approved are; Alfred Tuah-Yeboah- Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department, Michael Okyere Baafi- Ministry of Trade and Industry, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam- Ministry of Energy.
The rest are; Stephen Jalulah- Ministry of Roads and Highways, Thomas Mbomba- Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Herbert Krapa- Ministry of Trade and Industry, Fatimatu Abubakar- Ministry of Information, Mahama Seini –Ministry Health and Bright Wireko Brobbey- Ministry of Employment.
